Overview

Mt. Kazbek is not just another peak over 5000 metres with superb climbs and walks – its a mythological mountain, called Mount Caucasus in ancient Greek legend – here Zeus punished the God Prometheus for giving fire to mankind. He was chained to its cliffs and a raven sent to peck at his liver. This story has a curious parallel with the Georgian legend of Amirani – local to the Kazbegi region. Another god-like character who, in the Georgians case, challenged God – and when he failed  he was also chained to the flank of this dramatic mountain, called by Georgians Mkinvartsveri.

Locals claim it was climbed for the first time by Joseph from Khevi in the 17th century, but officially the first ascent was made by the Englishman Douglas Freshfield, accompanied by local guides in 1868.

Situated in the Eastern Caucasus  Mt. Kazbeg is one of Georgians beloved climb routes. The mountain is accessible for most fit climber. During the trip along the military road you’ll have an opportunity to view many historical places, the UNESCO heritage sites and architectural complexes, like  Mtkheta –  an important political and cultural center from 3rd century BC, 16th-17thcentuires Ananuri architectural complex - a well preserved castle. Gudauri mountainous resort, that is popular all year round for mountaineers and ski-adventure lovers, offering superb conditions for on-piste and off-piste skiing or snowboarding, snow-showing, heliski and many other winter activities. Drive over Cross pass at 2395 m. passing thermal springs and arrive to Stepantsminda (*former Kazbegi) – the hub of multi-adventure, adrenaline and exceptional challenges!
